The Wait is Over!
Valued for their proven superiority in ocular health and patient satisfaction, daily disposable silicone hydrogel (SiHy) contact lenses have irrevocably shifted optometry’s approach to patient care. Single use lenses, offering the convenience of daily disposability and “carefree” safety have increasingly become the first choice of clinicians and parents alike.1,2 Be Free® Day lenses, Euclid Vision Corporation’s entry into the single use contact lens space, goes beyond providing us with just another excellent fitting option. Being a daily disposable silicone hydrogel lens designed specifically for myopia, optometrists and their patients will no longer have to “settle” for older (HEMA) contact lens technology. Be Free® Day lenses’ combination of an innovative silicone core, biomimetic surface structure, and a novel optical design will strategically fill this hole in the myopia toolbox.
Comfort
First impressions count – especially for new and often inexperienced contact lens wearers. A lens that settles quickly and comfortably, allowing the patient to “forget about her eyes” is one that will ultimately be the most successful from the perspective of the patient, the parents, and the practice.
While there may be trepidation (along with excitement) on the part of everyone involved – including the patient, the parent, and the contact lens technician – contemporary (first time) contact lens fitting often proves to be a smooth and rewarding experience for patients of all ages. In fact, research shows that most children “get the hang of it” just about as quickly as adults.3 With a 50% water content and modulus MPa of 0.65, Be Free® Day lenses successfully balance “softness” with ease of handling.
Following their initial positive handling and adaptation experience,4 lasting comfort is of paramount importance to the busy and visually demanding lives of today’s wearers. Be Free® Day lenses phosphorylcholine-based biomimetic surface technology, having a contact angle of <15°, promotes excellent surface wetting and moisture retention in addition to resisting deposits. In fact, patients reported better comfort wearing Be Free® Day lenses, both during initial insertion and throughout the day.4
Ocular Health
Optometry’s recognition and appreciation of the ocular health benefits of silicone hydrogel contact lenses has continued to shape professional behavior and drive industry research and development. Since the initial launch of silicone hydrogel contact lenses (in the U.S) in 1999, clinicians continue to rely on the increasingly sophisticated material profiles of these unique polymers, namely oxygen permeability. We now know that exceeding the physiological demands of the ocular surface have visible and measurable benefits. Visibly whiter eyes and elimination of possible adverse effects of prolonged contact lens wear such as corneal neovascularization, limbal stem cell stress, and corneal edema are all notable and important outcomes.5
The currently established levels for corneal oxygenation while wearing a contact lens are primarily defined by oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) and oxygen tension (mm Hg) at the corneal surface.
Practitioners are often limited to fitting lenses manufactured from conventional HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) when selecting daily disposable myopia lenses, including omafilcon A and etafilcon A, both with an average Dk/t of 25. These meet the minimum threshold of Dk/t of 24 necessary for daily wear to prevent significant corneal swelling.6
In contrast, modern silicone hydrogels having a Dk/t above 100 are considered “hyper-transmissible” and more significantly reduce the possibility of physiologic stress.7 Be Free® Day daily disposable contact lenses are manufactured in toufilcon B, a novel silicone hydrogel material, transmitting substantial oxygen with a Dk of 91 (Dk/t 114).
Comfortable, consistent, and safe full daily wear is imperative, especially in today’s busy and highly engaged patient population. Be Free® Day lenses, offering both innovative material and optical design, offer a comprehensive and robust approach to satisfying these clinical goals.
Visual Quality
Reliable and consistent optical performance are keys to ensuring patient satisfaction and providing comfortable visual quality. This is especially true for clinicians tasked with management of a clinically challenging and changing demographic.
Enter Be Free® Day lenses, delivering excellent visual acuity while intending to reduce glare and halos in an easy-to-prescribe contact lens. Euclid Vision Corporation, continuing its legacy as a global leader and clinical partner in proactive myopia, has partnered with the world-renowned leader in myopia research, the Brien Holden Vision Institute, in developing this revolutionary contact lens technology.
The Win-Win
Be Free® Day daily disposable silicone hydrogel contact lenses are an outstanding and important addition to the clinical options for myopia. The contact lens clinician, dedicated to ensuring the best in ocular surface health, in addition to proactively prescribing lenses with effective optical design, no longer must choose between the two.
Be Free® Day lenses integrate seamlessly into busy optometric practices, being simple to fit with no specialized training or equipment required. Their versatility offers robust applicability and is often requested by parents who desire a more “traditional” approach to contact lens wear. Daily disposables also provide clinicians with complete flexibility as part of their myopia strategy.
Patient satisfaction with ease of handling and comfort will foster practice growth through word-of-mouth referrals. Backed by Euclid Vision Corporation’s strong commitment to practitioner success, proactive clinicians will enjoy ready access to expert consulting, education, and marketing assets.
Myopia care is rapidly evolving from a “niche” or “specialty” service to one having an important place within full scope primary care. Fortunately, optometrists now have a new and innovative tool to champion the charge against myopia.
